August 12, 2002

Well, lots of excitement at work today. Someone pressed the emergency power off button this afternoon. This button shuts off all power to the machine room. It got very quiet very fast. Oh, and it wasn't me *grin*.

I was actually having the day off until I got paged at about 3 PM asking if I could come in to direct the powerup of the VMS equipment. It took us nine hours to get everything back up and running. Amazingly, we lost only 3 disks out of over 2500. That's not bad at all.

I was again up early on Sunday morning, which is surprising considering the time I got to bed. However, I hoofed it over to the Elite Cafe for brunch at 11. Gumbo and eggs benedict. One more restaurant for dinner: Scoma's. I haven't been to this establishment for some years, but it was as good as I remembered it to be. Oysters natural and blackened swordfish. I went back to the hotel and slept like a prince *grin*

I didn't do anything Friday night other then stop in a Spec's for a nightcap on the way back to the hotel. So I was up early on Saturday morning. I spent some time in Chinatown checking out all the fresh produce, and getting stares from all the chinese. Then I walked up to Union Square as I was looking for a nice pair of new dress slacks. And wouldn't you know it? I found a pair of black Hugo Boss at fifty percent off at the anniversary sale on at Nordstrom's. I took them as they were, and headed to a tailor up the road to get them cuffed on the spot. I am very happy with them. Very classy.

I dropped the trousers off at the hotel and headed to Freddie's Sandwiches at North Beach. I was pretty hungry, so got the large Italian combo on sourdough. Off to the Red Jack Saloon for some beers to go with lunch. Last time I was here, there was a bachelor party in full swing. Nothing as exciting this time. I stuck around to watch the Giant's baseball game, which turned out to be a good one.

Dinner on Saturday night was at Moose's. This is one great restaurant. I started with ahi tuna tartare, with sungold tomato gazpacho, and a basil salad. The main was prosciutto wrapped chicken breast with onions, potatoes, and a grape reduction sauce. And a nice bottle of SavBlanc to go with it. I think I should retitle this page "Krait eats San Francisco".

After dinner, I went back to the hotel and changed into jeans and a t-shirt so I wouldn't look out of place at The Saloon. Good blues music until one in the morning.

Well, I didn't expect to be heading back to San Francisco quite so quickly, but with two days off owed for the work that I put in for the disaster recovery test, and looking at my on-call schedule, I took the opportunity when it presented itself.

So I toodled over to the Greyhound terminal and got on a bus. I got to the city in time to go for a late lunch, but I didn't have much, as I planned to again end up at Fog City Diner for dinner, one of my favourite restaurants in the city. There must have been sixty people waiting for a table, but I got a seat at the counter right away. Sometimes, dining alone has its advantages. This was a seafood weekend, so I had oysters natural and a really nice fillet of ono, which is one of the fish from Hawaii. (Actually, it's just wahoo. I hate these guys when marlin fishing, but they're good eating.) I also ordered a half bottle of Beaulieu Vineyard's 1999 Sonoma Chadonnay. Yummms.
